This interaction can cause injury and pain. In this course, we are going to be focusing on the structure of this complex system. Each vertebral joint is a link in this important system. In this course, we will be using a variety of exercises to strengthen the core muscles of the abdominal, oblique, transverse, and transversus abdominis.
The first step in learning to get stronger is understanding lumbar spine anatomy. The vertebral column is formed by a series of strong bones and cartilages that join at fixed points. You will see the many segments of the spine in your anatomy exam. As you learn about the vertebrae, you will also learn about the intervertebral disks, which support and protect the spinal cord and the nerves. With the help of the spinal canal, the spinal bones will give way to a series of strong ligaments, muscles, and supporting tendons that give rise to the muscles. The muscles themselves have two parts, long and short. The long muscles of the abdomen and legs are part of the muscles of the trunk and are responsible for stabilizing the trunk. The short muscles are attached to the bones of the pelvic region.
The muscles of the abdomen and the pelvic region are also activated by the spinal cord. In this section of the anatomy course, we will concentrate on the muscles of the trunk and abdominals. It is important to know how these muscles operate as you learn about the lumbar vertebrae and spinal cord. Many of the exercises that will be given in this course are movements that strengthen the trunk muscles.
